When
I think of inspiration I think of what causes me to breathe
deeply, to absolutely draw more air and to know that
life is worth living and time worth giving. In my case,
I am part of a growing dance and drum community that
is beautiful, part of a greater whole for sure; but,
in its infancy in this area (infancy as it relates to
my vision) a marvel to watch and incredibly inspiring.
Dancers learning, drummers improving, parties happening,
cultures sharing, young joining, old engaging, all focusing
on the way authentic African and Latin drum and dance share
a common heritage and are useful in bringing so many people
together to learn, enjoy and share. We are touching lives
and helping people.
I am inspired to bring African and Latin
dance and drum into the area in such a way that a community
of friends and artists is forming that can appreciate the
culture, dance the movement, drum the pulse, enjoy the
connection and share the experience. I want to train dancers
and drummers from the beginner to the professional level
who want to move and play in classes, in clubs, and in
performances.
I enjoy promoting parties
through which people can have an incredibly fun time
learning authentic movement and experiencing greater
connections among themselves. I thrive on educating
young people who already know that cultural diversity
enriches their lives. I will remain a student of
African and Latin dance and drum history exploring the
African diasporas out of Central and West African into
the Latin and Caribbean worlds and the implications thereof
for world rhythmic and dance expression.
